Diplomatic and Government Officials

A-1, A-2, and G-1 through G-4 visas may be issued to diplomats and other government officials for official travel to the United States. Generally, the type of visa required by a diplomat or other government official depends upon their purpose of travel to the United States. There are very specific requirements which must be met by applicants in order to qualify for A, G or NATO visas under U.S. immigration law. Normally, the personal interview requirement for bona fide A and G visa applicants who are citizens of, or accredited to, Costa Rica is waived. However, there may be circumstances within which the consular officer will ask for an interview.

If you are a diplomat or qualified government official seeking visas for official travel to the United States, you do not need to make an appointment through the online appointment system. Diplomats and other government officials seeking visas should coordinate with their Ministry of Foreign Affairs (or local Embassy or employing International Organization, as appropriate) to submit their passport and visa application via courier under cover of a Diplomatic Note or other appropriate official communication. Please ensure that that the Diplomatic Note specifies the general nature of your official business in the United States (i.e.: is it a temporary visit versus a diplomatic assignment, is it with the United States government or with an International Organization located in the United States, or does it solely involve transit through the United States.)

If you are a diplomat or a government official who holds a valid diplomatic passport and you are seeking a visa in that diplomatic passport for non-official (i.e.: tourist) travel to the United States, you may apply without an appointment between 8:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday, excepting U.S. or Costa Rican holidays. You will not have to pay the visa application fee; however you will need to submit your fingerprints and fulfill other application requirements. Please bring your valid diplomatic passport, the DS-160 confirmation page, your photo, and other documentation normally required for the classification of visa you are seeking.
