Renew My Visa

Interview Waiver

Certain visa applicants who have previously been issued U.S. visas may apply to renew their visas without attending an interview.

Please note that if you wish to request an interview waiver, all application documents must be received at our DHL Document Drop-Off Location at least ten calendar days prior to the one year anniversary of the previous visa’s expiration date. (For instance, if your visa expired on October 20, 2017, you must drop off your application documents at our DHL office before October 10, 2018.)

.Qualifications for the Interview Waiver

To qualify for interview waiver, visa applicants must be applying to renew a visa in the same classification as their prior nonimmigrant visa. Right now, this service is only available to adults applicants renewing a B1/B2 or F visa. Applicants must satisfy all the following criteria for their visa class. If applying as a group, all members must fulfill all criteria to quality for interview waiver.

For B1/B2 visa holders:

  • The applicant is a Ghana passport holder; and their last visa was issued in Ghana;
  •  The applicant’s last visa interview resulted in an issuance, and that visa has not been cancelled or revoked (note: a "cancelled without prejudice" or "CWOP" notation on an old visa is NOT a visa cancellation);
  •  The applicant was issued a five-year B1/B2 United States visa;
  • The prior visa expired no more than 12 months prior to the application for  reissuance;
  • The applicant was at least 14 years old at the time of the last issuance;
  • The applicant has never been arrested anywhere in the world, not had an encounter with law enforcement, customs, or immigration officials in the United States.

For  F visa holders:

  •   The applicant is a Ghana passport holder; and their last visa was issued in Ghana;
  •   The applicant’s last visa interview resulted in issuance of a four-year  F visa, and that visa has not been cancelled or revoked (note: a “cancelled without prejudice” or “CWOP” notation on an old visa is NOT a visa cancellation);
  • The prior F visa expired no more than 12 months prior to the application for reissuance;
  • The applicant is continuing in the same program the original visa was issued for, for example continuing with a bachelor’s degree, even if you have changed institutions, OR if you are continuing with a different program at the same institution; for example completing a bachelor’s program and continuing to study for a master’s degree at the same institution.
  • A copy of the applicant’s endorsed I-20 is submitted with the application -- please do not send originals;
  • A current transcript is included with the application;
  • The applicant was at least 14 years old at the time of the last visa issuance; and
  • The applicant has never been arrested anywhere in the world, nor had an encounter with law enforcement, customs, or immigration officials in the United States.

Applicants who do not meet these criteria should schedule regular appointments to ensure they receive the earliest visa appointment available to them. If you schedule a renewal appointment but do not meet the criteria for this category, you will be turned away on your appointment date and required to schedule a new appointment. This could result in a significant delay in your application.

If someone in your family or group does not meet the qualifications above, please do not request that their interview be waived. Each applicant must meet the qualifications individually. For instance, we cannot waive an interview for a child because the parent qualifies under these guidelines. In that case, the child would need to come to the Embassy for an interview.

 Applicants should allow for about 14 days for the Interview Waiver process to be completed.
