Renew My Visa

On this page:

Important:

Please note that the Interview Waiver/ Visa Renewal program is resumed in Budapest. We encourage you to submit your documents by mail due to the pandemic situation.

Overview

We accept visa renewals by mail and there is an option to renew your visa by an interview waiver appointment. As with any visa application, however, the use of the Interview Waiver Program does not guarantee visa issuance. The consular officer may, after reviewing your visa application, require you to appear for an in-person interview.

Please note that the Interview Waiver Program by mail takes 8-12 working days. If your travel is urgent, please use the interview waiver appointment procedures.

Qualifications

You may be eligible for an interview waiver if you are under 14 or over 80 years of age and you are a Hungarian citizen or a third country national permanently residing in Hungary.

You may be eligible to apply for a U.S. visa without an interview if you are renewing a prior U.S. visa that is still valid or expired less than 48 months ago.

To renew your visa via the Interview Waiver Program, you must meet all the requirements listed below:

  • Your previous visa is valid, or the expiration date is within 48 months.
  • You are applying for the exact same type of visa as before. For example, you had a B-1/B-2 visa and wish to apply for another B-1/B-2 visa.
  • Your ten fingerprints were collected during a visa application in the same visa category.
  • You are a citizen or a long-term resident of Hungary.
  • You are physically present in Hungary during the application process.
  • Your citizenship and visa class are not subject to the payment of a reciprocity fee.
  • Your nationality is the same as it was at the time of the issuance of your previous visa.

  • You have not violated the terms of a previous U.S. visa or have not been in violation of or non-compliance with U.S. immigration laws or regulations.
  • F and M visa holders are eligible to renew their visas if they continue participation in the same program as the previous visa, even if at a different institution, or attend the same institution in a different program (the SEVIS number may be the same or may be new).
  • J visa holders are eligible for interview waiver if their Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) number has not changed from the previously issued SEVIS number.

----Additional provisions for F and M applicants:

First-time F and M applicants are eligible for interview waiver if they are citizens of the Visa Waiver Program participating countries and their ESTA application was not denied. If the F and M applicant is not a citizen of the Visa Waiver country, the applicant still may be eligible for an interview waiver if he/she was issued any class of a US visa previously.

---Additional provisions for J applicants:

First-time J applicants are eligible for interview waiver if they are “Academic” J visa applicants: secondary and university students, professors, research scholars, short-term scholars, and specialists. Au-pairs and interns are not eligible under this provision.
