Overview

Generally, a citizen of a foreign country who wishes to enter the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for temporary stay or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. Citizens of qualified countries may be also able to visit the U.S. without a visa under the Visa Waiver Program. If you do not qualify for the Visa Waiver Program or are traveling to study, work, or participate in an exchange program, you must apply for a nonimmigrant visa.

Please confirm whether or not you need to apply for a visa as you may not need to pay and apply for a new U.S. visa if you already hold a valid U.S. visa or if you are a national of a Visa Waiver Program participating country. The MRV fee is non-refundable and non-transferable. Applicants should first determine whether or not they require a visa to travel to the US before submitting their applications.

All applicants between the ages of 14 and 79 applying for U.S. visas are required to appear in person for a visa interview at the U.S. Consulate General in Auckland. You must schedule an appointment for the interview, either online using this website or through the call center.

If you are applying for a visa type that you have previously been approved for, such as a work visa or tourist visa, you may qualify for an exemption to the interview requirement. However, the use of the mail-in service does not guarantee visa issuance. In some cases, applicants may still be required to appear for a visa interview at the U.S. Consulate. Examples of this include incomplete and/or inaccurate applications. For information, please refer to the U.S. Embassy website and Renew My Visa.

If you are an applicant under the age of 14 or over 79 years of age, you may be eligible for an interview waiver application. Children less than 14 years of age applying for their visas at the same time with their parent(s) or guardian(s), do not need to schedule their appointments. For information on visa application for children, please click here.

Please note the U.S. Consulate General in Auckland does not open until 7:45 AM each morning. Due to security concerns, you will not be able to enter the building prior to that time. At no time are you authorized to remain in the lobby of the Citigroup Building while awaiting Consular services.

Supporting Documents

To schedule a nonimmigrant visa appointment, you must have the following information and documents available:

  • A passport valid for travel to the United States with a validity date at least six months beyond your intended period of stay in the United States (unless country-specific agreements provide exemptions). If more than one person is included in your passport, each person desiring a visa must submit an application.
  • The "MRV ref" number from your Kiwi Bank receipt if you have paid at Kiwi Bank. (Click here if you need help finding the receipt numbers.)
  • Your DS-160 confirmation page
  • Your e-mail address
  • If applicable, required documents based on visa class (such as a petition approval for petition-based visas; more information about visa types and information about each can be found here).

When you attend the interview, the documents you are required to bring in addition to your Appointment Confirmation Letter are:

  • Confirmation page of the DS-160 form;
  • A valid passport or travel document, including all previous passports;
  • Passport size photograph, full frontal view on plain background measuring 2” x 2” – to bring if this has not been uploaded with the DS-160;

Please note that after an applicant has submitted the online DS-160, he/she will receive the DS-160 confirmation page.
