Renew My Visa

On this page:

Repeat travelers to the United States may, under some circumstances, renew their visas without appearing at the U.S. Embassy/Consulate for an interview. Additionally, some governments (including the Russian Federation) allow their citizens to travel with a valid visa in an expired passport, provided the traveler also has a valid passport. If your government allows travel with a valid visa and a combination of an expired and valid visa, then the U.S. government will allow you to travel to the United States with your old passport containing a valid visa and your new, valid passport.

Applicants must schedule an appointment to drop off visa renewal applications in Moscow, Yekaterinburg (Consular Services Suspended) or Vladivostok (Consular Services Suspended), though there may not be appointment availability for all visa categories in all locations. Applicants who reside in Russia may also apply at any U.S. Embassy/Consulate outside of Russia, and must pay the visa application fee (“MRV fee”) in the country where the visa interview takes place. To submit a routine nonimmigrant visa application and schedule an interview at a consular section outside of Russia, please visit or

You may submit your visa application at U.S. Visa document delivery locations operated by VFS Global as an interview waiver submission and proceed without a consular interview if you meet all of the following qualifications:

  • All ten fingerprints were captured at a prior consular interview
  • Your most recent visa is currently valid or you are applying within 48 months of the expiration of that visa. This policy is in effect until December 31, 2021.
  • You are applying for the exact same type of visa as your current/previous visa
  • Your visa does not have Clearance Received annotated on it
  • You must be present in the Russian Federation

If any of the above conditions are not met then you must schedule an interview (please note that we are currently not able to offer interviews for most visa classes at this time).

Note: Using the interview waiver service does not guarantee visa issuance. In some cases, you may be required to appear for a visa interview at the U.S. Embassy/Consulate, for example, if you submit an incomplete and/or inaccurate application. Submit your application well in advance of your planned travel to allow for the possibility that a visa interview will be necessary.

How to Apply

Step 1

Pay the visa application fee. This webpage lists all of the visa fees associated with the most common nonimmigrant visa types. Instructions for how to pay your fees are available on this webpage.

Step 2

Complete the Nonimmigrant Visa Electronic Application (DS-160) form. (Choose ‘Russian’ in the dropdown menu at the top right of the screen to view the application with Russian translations.) After completing the form, print and save your confirmation page.

Step 3

Register an account on this webpage. On Step 3 select Submission of application without interview to U.S. Visa document delivery locations operated by VFS Global. If you haven’t filled out the checklist in advance, you will need to complete it in a U.S. Visa document delivery locations operated by VFS Global. An employee of the U.S. Visa document delivery location operated by VFS Global will review your document checklist before accepting your application for delivery to the U.S. Embassy/Consulate.
