Security Regulations

On this page:

All visitors to the U.S. Embassy, including those for U.S. Citizen services and visa appointments, are required to wear face coverings at all times while inside the Embassy and Consular Section. Visitors are expected to bring their own masks/face coverings when visiting and may be turned away if they are unable to comply with this requirement. This applies to anyone over the age of 4. Please visit this CDC webpage for tips on how to create and effectively use cloth face coverings.

In an effort to limit possible exposure to the novel coronavirus, the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm requests that individuals with pending consular appointments who meet the following criteria postpone their appointments by at least 14 days:

(1) Individuals who are experiencing flu-like symptoms; or

 (2) Individuals who believe they may have been exposed to the novel coronavirus.

All visitors are subject to an airport-type screening. When planning your visit, bring only what is needed for your business. You are not allowed to enter the U.S. Embassy while carrying any of the following items:

  • Electronic devices such as laptops, IPods, IPads, internet-capable watches, USB sticks, cameras, video cameras, Transaction Authentication Number (TAN) generators or code keys etc
  • Large shoulder bags/purses - only bags that can be carried by hand will be permitted
  • Bags such as travel bags, backpacks, briefcases, suitcases, leather, cloth bags, and zip folders - you can only carry plastic bags containing application-related papers
  • Food and liquid items
  • Sealed envelopes or packages
  • Cigarettes, cigars, match boxes, lighters
  • Sharp objects such as scissors, pen knives or nail files
  • Weapons or explosive materials of any kind

This list is not exhaustive. Other items may be prohibited at the discretion of security staff.

There is a limited storage space for small items such as electronic equipment, cellular telephones or tablets at the embassy entrance. Personal laptops and larger electrical/electronic devices are prohibited. You will not be permitted entry if you are in possession of a laptop or larger electrical/electronic device. We do not have lockers or storage facilities for bigger luggage at the Embassy. Larger storage lockers can be found at the mail bus/train station in Stockholm (Centralstationen), or at the airport.

Due to security considerations, there is no information window for walk-in visitors at the U.S. Embassy. Only visa applicants with scheduled interviews will be admitted.
