Overview

You are not allowed to enter the U.S. Embassy or Consulate while carrying any of the following items:

  • Battery-operated or electronic devices such as cell phones, iPods, iPads/tablets, PDAs, digital watches, cameras, compact discs, DVDs, MP3 players, laptops, or portable music players
  • Large shoulder bags/purses – can be brought but will be thoroughly searched.only bags that can be carried by hand will be permitted
  • Bags such as travel bags, backpacks, briefcases, suitcases, leather/cloth bags, and zip folders - please avoid bringing anything unnecessary; all bags will be thoroughly searched and the more you bring, the more you will be delayed.
  • Liquid items
  • Sealed envelopes or packages
  • Match boxes and lighters
  • Sharp objects such as scissors, pen knives or nail files
  • Weapons or explosive materials of any kind

This list is not exhaustive. Other items may be prohibited at the discretion of security staff.

There is no facility at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate to store prohibited items except for cell phones and similar small items. You must make arrangements to store these items before entering.

Due to security and time considerations and especially because all information is available online, there is no information window for walk-in visitors at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Only visa applicants with scheduled interviews will be admitted.
